Daan Roosegaarde of Studio Roosegaarde is doing some pretty cool sensor projects. This one connects proximity sensors and audio sensors to hundreds of little fans to create an interactive wind installation.

This spawns from a recent discussions we had about head tracking and creating very believable VR on a 2D display. It looks like that crazy Wii-mote guy has done it again - headtracking with a wiimote!

“Ikea’s Dreamkitchen offers a tremendous visual experience: visitors navigate in slow motion in 3D through IKEA products. Interesting effect: the volume of the music changes as you pass throught the “IKEA universe”. Further examples: Dromkok, Demo. In the latter examples you can flip through 3D-rooms as well.” [Smashing Magazine]Ikea Dream Kitchen via Smashing Magazine »

No silly gloves (or wiimote) ! The ZCam is the first low-cost, consumer videocamera that can capture video with depth information and probably the first real challenger to Nintendo’s Wiimote: with its 3D capture abilities it will allow you to play Wii-style without using any controls whatsoever. In fact, it is so precise that it will even recognize your finger gestures to fire a weapon or manipulate your computer like in Minority Report, but without gloves or any other external device.

We have had a fascination with flexible displays (don’t we all?) for quite some time. Some of us even played around with funky double-hinged laptop designs that had a continuous display surface while in college (purely vapor concepts, of course). What an amazing thing, though, to be able to have flexible displays - particularly touch-enabled flexible displays. Well technology is catching up and real products are starting to trickle out.
Here are two such products:

“I will say that if you are impressed by the ‘touch features’ in the iPhone, you’ll be blown away by what’s coming in Windows 7. Now if only we could convince more OEMs that Windows Touch Technology is going to drive their sales.’I’ll believe it when I see it. Maybe we can get in on some of this action!’”

“Working together with the amazing Emily Gobeille, we created the interactive installation, ‘Funky Forest’ which premiered at the 2007Cinekid festival in the Netherlands. ‘Funky Forest’ is an interactive ecosystem where children create trees with their body and then divert the water flowing from the waterfall to the trees to keep them alive. The health of the trees contributes to the overall health of the forest and the types of creatures that inhabit it. Made with openFrameworks.” [Muonics]

“Now there is a three step process. For the first step, over a period of 100 frames, the gravity orbs paint their cross-section onto the paper where it intersects it. The second step, also cumulative over 100 frames, has the particle orbs raining down a mist of ink. The third step is where it gets fun. Every 100 frames, all of the geometry collapses onto the paper. Voila! Instant chaotic hair balls.” [Vimeo]
